SUSTAINABILITY
Huron County has signed the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge, to demonstrate our commitment to improving our tourism sustainability between now and 2030.
The UN World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”
Each year, we commit to measuring and improving our tourism sustainability performance in the following ways:
- Implementation of actions within the Corporate Climate Change Adaptation Plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and ensure we are prepared for future climate changes.
- Achieve energy savings through our Conservation and Demand Management Plan.
- Promote corporate and community reduction of single-use items.
- Work alongside staff and community partners to further education and awareness on opportunities to become more sustainable.
- Educate our tourism businesses on the importance of sustainable tourism and provide examples and best practices on how they can make their operations more sustainable.
- Participate in Regional Tourism Organization 4 (RT04) Sustainable Committee to better educate ourselves on sustainable tourism and work collectively with our neighbouring municipalities to improve sustainability within regionally.
- Approval and implementation of a new Huron County Cycling Master Plan that encourages visitors to explore Huron County.
- Develop a Sustainable Tourism Plan for Huron County in 2025 with targeted recommendations and measurable goals.
- Take the GreenStep Sustainable Tourism Self Assessment and share those results with our tourism stakeholders in Huron County.
